So why GLOCK?!?!
Glocks seem to be the “go to” pistol for so many people in the firearm community, from active duty military and police to the guy looking for his first pistol, everyone seems to want to start with a Glock. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the Smith & Wesson (S&W) M&P line for many years and it has been hard to find a reason to switch to anything else.
Why would an M&P fan choose to buy a Glock?
Generally speaking, choosing a firearm is a matter of personal preference and that is why i’ve typically owned S&W M&P but recently I had a chance to spend some time with a Gen4 Glock 19 and I realized that many of the bias that I had were unfounded and after getting used to the ergonomics I found that I really enjoyed it. The biggest factor in my case was the way the trigger felt from the factory, it was light, crisp and allowed me a lot better control than I had previously experienced with the M&P line (prior to having getting a trigger job, which can be costly).
Comparatively, the Glock 19 Gen 4 with the medium backstrap seemed to fit me exceptionally well and provided a very stable and secure grip allowing my entire hand to fit on the pistol grip while also maintaining a small profile which makes me at least consider the possibility of it replacing my M&P9c as my EDC firearm.
What's in the box?
When you first open the box you may be surprised by what you see !. To be honest I was a little disappointed in the appearance. For me I have become familiar buying a Smith and Wesson or a Sig Sauer and being presented with a nicely laid out firearm with spare mags and back straps neatly placed in cut out foam. That is not the case with glock . Although the plastic box it comes in is very nice and durable when you open it everything is just kind of tossed in the box . As for the contents inside You will first notice of course the glock you purchased. ( in this case it's the Glock 19 Gen 4) . You will receive (3) 15 round magazines , (1) mag loader , (4) changeable back straps ,and of course your traditional pistol lock and cleaning brush as well as your manufacturer's safety and operation manual .
The trigger is a great trigger right out of the box it seems to pull just over 5 pounds but it's very crisp and the reset is absolutely perfect making follow-up shots extremely quick, which was a very strong selling point for me.
The ergonomics on the Glock 19 are very good but I would definitely give the upper hand in ergonomics to the Smith & Wesson M&P. The Glock Gen 4 have made a huge difference with the new back strap design creating a very comfortable grip. To be honest I couldn't even shoot a Glock pistol prior to Gen 4 . Previously, when I tried to get a high pistol grip on the gun the grip angle caused my wrist to be in a very uncomfortable position which actually caused pain in my hand while firing. As for the Gen 4 that has most definitely not been the case your hand will fit high on the pistol grip creating a low bore axis and in return giving you excellent control and recoil management.
I actually prefer the Glock 19 sights over the standard three dot sights you see on most modern handguns today. If you're not familiar with the Glock sights they have a very unique design offering a fairly basic front sight but matched with a white lined “U” shaped design in the rear. This design creates a very quick sight picture when presenting the gun and is very easy to align. The only downside to these sights is unfortunately they are made from plastic. Although being made from plastic they seem to hold up pretty well to most of the abuse you could put the gun through. I personally would really like to see Glock provide their customers with some nice metal sights!
Like all guns accuracy is really determined by the shooter but generally speaking the gun shoots very well . Through my experience so far with the Glock 19 between 7-20 yards the gun is quite the little shooter. I was easily able to hit an eight inch steel plate with little effort and sometimes even ignoring the basic fundamentals just to see how it would perform. I also shot some groups on paper that I will share down below.
Durability And Reliability
To be completely honest I don't have enough trigger time on this particular gun to give accurate data on the subject . But in my experience the gun ran great with zero malfunctions . I have heard that on the Gen 4 when it first released there was issues with the extractor but that has not been my experience. I look forward to extensive testing in the near future to provide you guys with a better representation of the guns Reliability.
Overall I think the Glock 19 Gen 4 is an outstanding pistol. I have really learned to appreciate it and I no longer have any negative thoughts against glock that I previously had. I would highly recommend this gun for just about any person and any philosophy of use .
